Philosophy

Yoga is about cultivating self-awareness with the goal of developing and calming the mind

Most people believe yoga to be about a set of physical postures that promote flexibility and fitness of the body. However, this is only one aspect of yoga. The system of yoga is about cultivating self-awareness with the goal of developing and calming the mind. As such yoga presents a perfect complement to psychology.

Yoga incorporates an understanding of the mind from the context of the whole person and presents a systematic mind-body approach that incorporates: physical postures and movement, breathing exercises, deep relaxation, mindfulness and meditation. Psychology practices include cognitive therapy, self-reflection, self development, and the cultivation of positive values and lifestyle factors.

Scientific research reveals that faster and more long-term healing occurs through the intelligent integration of mind and body techniques. Yoga  has been shown to be beneficial in stress and anxiety disorders [1], PTSD[2], eating disorders[3], and depression [4].

GUIDE

Ro Simmons

Clinical Psychologist     Yoga Teacher

I am a Mother to 5 (adult) children, a Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Teacher. I have a passion for helping others and have always been intrigued by the body’s capacity for self healing. In my early 20's,  I travelled to India, Nepal and Tibet to trek the Himalayas. It was here I was introduced to Eastern philosophy and yoga. I started practising yoga for its physical benefits.  I continue to practise yoga because it brings benefits to the mind and mood.

I maintain a psychology practice in the Illawarra focused on integration of the whole person.  At PsiYoga I teach trauma sensitive group classes for stress, anxiety, depression and trauma. As a psychologist, I endorse yoga as an invaluable tool to balance one's life. My work aims to integrate insights from psychology and neuroscience with the practical strategies and wisdom from the yoga tradition to best support mental and physical wellbeing.

My methods as a yoga instructor incorporate 20 years of clinical experience, a background in mindfulness practices and a philosophy that treats the person as a whole.
